It’s an unfortunate truth that many times in your life, you’ll often feel as though no one fully understands you. The human heart is so complex that sometimes we even confuse ourselves. It this very complexity, however, that makes us human, and makes it so thrilling to meet someone new and get to know them. In the same way, each Pu-erh tea is utterly unique and quite complex.
Like a person, the best to get to know any particular Pu-erh tea is to spend time with it. Though tea cannot speak to you with words, it has the power to teach you a great deal about both itself and yourself when you brew it and drink it. Eleanor Roosevelt once famously quipped: “A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it's in hot water.” Pu-erh tea, like any great woman or man, is worth taking the time to get to know, and is at its best when you allow it to show you its true potential.
When you first add hot water to a gaiwan full of tea, the tea will slowly begin to wake up, giving us the slightest hint of its true aroma, and a glimpse of its unique tea water. As the tea continues to steep, its aroma, color and character begin to reveal itself. The tea opens up to you, and you can begin trying to understand its several mysteries.
The important thing to remember is that this process of truly understanding a tea requires patience and a gentle spirit. If you do take the time to do this, however, you will not only more fully enjoy the tea in the present, but will also make a friend for life.
